This is a tricky one Mari. I am not actually sure that there is one factor to be honest as we know that social factors (such as access to support from others, friends etc), more individual factors (e.g. how people think about their own health), larger societal factors (e.g. where we live) and biological factors can make a difference. I think that perceived ability to make changes to your life is also important. We really find it hard when we feel trapped and feel like we can’t change our situation. Also modelling as in terms of the types of behaviour we see around us and what we have grown up with. So not one factor but many. There are others too I know!

I’d say physical health has the most effect on mental health. We all know how hard it is think straight with a heavy cold, never mind serious physical health conditions.

Is important to remember though there probably many factors that will influence mental health. I think society has developed some unhelpful habits from mental-health, for examplem not talking about how we really feel and the culture from comparing ourselves to others and giving ourselves lots pressure. If we were taugh emotional intelligence how to understand our own and other peoples emotions would really support mental health.
