Hi Mara, good question! To give pupils the ability of measuring the air quality around their school themselves. High volumes of traffic during the morning and afternoon commute increase the levels of nitrogen oxide and carbon monoxide around schools. When walking and cycling, children and their families breathe in these pollutants. The schools and local council’s could use this information to make the roads around schools safer and healthier. Also, when the participants or public collect data, we call this citizen science. The pupils would become active researchers taking regular readings from the monitor. Hope this helps.
