Hi Niamh – great question. The monitor uses a light scattering method to measure PM2.5 (particles that are smaller than 2.5 microns in diameter).

A single micron is 0.001mm in size – can you work out what 2.5 microns is in mm?

Air is drawn through a sensing chamber where light from a laser scatters off particles in the air flow. The light scatter is registered by a detector and converted into a measurement that estimates the number of particles in the air. These measurements can be uploaded to an app using Bluetooth.

Thanks Niamh, hope this answers your question.
