I’m enjoying the new Doctor Who. In many ways it’s gone back how the series started in the 1960s, as an education show with sci-fi episodes explaining science and historical episodes explaining history. They have dropped the plot that started with the seventh doctor (called the ‘cartmell masterplan’ after the writer) of making the Doctor into a divine being.
From a Jungian perspective, I see the Doctor as a trickster archetype – like Loki from Norse myth, or the Bunny from African mythology (like Bugs Bunny), or Lucifer from the biblical stories. In pretty much every mythology trickster gods are male, so I see the Doctor as if not literally male as least a masculine character.
That said, I liked Time Lady Romana who travelled with the fourth Doctor (in two of her incarnations), was more qualified in science than he was (she has a better degree result as he does as he was a bad student), and goes on to become president of Galifrey before the Time war.

I have to admit not having seen it as it was never my thing. I really do like the idea of a female doctor though and really think we need to make moves to things being more equitable. This is a good one in my opinion!
