I am not a clinical psychologist although it was something that I thought about at one point. I did work for a clinical psycholgy programme (as a researcher) for about 6 months though and was there during the shortlisting etc.

I think getting as much experience as possible is key. You need to stand out (in a good way). Can you shadow people and/or get involved in relevant mental health charities. It does mean doing things in your own time as extras but it is key. Increasingly, we see students doing Masters degrees to show their competence in the research area too. The programmes are looking for good clinical experience as well as good research skills.

      Good luck!

+1 on abbie’s comments. in addition:
      – look up the charity Mind for info and volunteering opportunities.
      – if you get the chance, consider doing the ‘mental health first aid’ course (costs about £150, takes a few days, like doing a normal first aid qualification)
      – when selecting a uni for your first psychology degree, see if they offer the higher qualifications in clinical work, as that means they will have staff interested in it and able to support you.
